Big Sur Real Estate and Property
Big Sur refers to that 90-mile stretch of one of the most beautiful scenic drives in America, if not the world. The pristine slopes facing Highway 1 are some of the most rigidly protected in the country. There are no neon signs, or signs of any kind. Big Sur homes and Big Sur real estate tastefully blend into the hillsides with ocean views that leave you breathless.
The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", and the Big Sur coast was first settled by the Spanish in the 1830s. Its population grew due to the Gold Rush. But it was the completion in 1937 of the coastal highway linking Northern and Southern California that marked the biggest change. Almost overnight, the still pristine Big Sur coast had become accessible by car.
Palatial, but tasteful, Big Sur houses continue to be built in prime spots, usually out of sight of the road, including a cliff hanging house owned by media mogul Ted Turner. It isn’t so easy to buy an old cabin, tear it down and build a modern house. Big Sur has strict building laws with standards regarding water and nature preservation. The idea is to keep new construction invisible from Highway 1. The rule of thumb is that you can build it as long as you can’t see it.
But there are a million reasons to want to own a Big Sur home. Besides the stunning views and living in nature, the proximity of the Pacific Ocean provides a mostly temperate climate. There are days when one can sun in winter on the deck of your Big Sur home, or wear a sweater at night in summer while gazing at the endless blanket of stars.
If you’re not yet ready to buy a Big Sur home, I recommend that you come out first for a visit and stay at the Post Ranch Inn, a luxury resort nestled on the cliffs of Big Sur. Dine at the Post Ranch Inn restaurant with a setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean with stunning views of the Big Sur coast. Even a short visit will get you thinking that this could be one of the most beautiful places in the world to live. When you reach that conclusion, come see me and I’ll help you find the perfect Big Sur home.
If you are looking for ocean view homes closer to Carmel, but with great natural beauty, check out the other Carmel Highlands neighborhoods.
