Rio Del Mar beach battered by the storms: Seacliff Beach..... where is it?

Posted by Gregg Camp on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 at 8:47pm.

Out on my morning stroll along Rio Del Mar beach I noticed the aftermath of the recent Santa Cruz storm. Aptos Creek was flowing well, getting rid of all the alluvial deposits from this past year. It finally had a straight shot to the ocean along Rio Del Mar beach. It seems all this year it had serpentined its way all around the sand, making for mucky water wading for all the get to the spits of sand nearest the water.

Today as I strolled along with an occasional mist, I came upon more carnage that I have seen in years. Well this storm did not seem to top monsters I recall, maybe it was one for the time of year. It did dump alot of rain and leave me and many others with Rio Del Mar homes without power. Some places branches were down, one inland lavvy building looked like it had a big cypres laying atop it's roof at Seacliff State Beach.

Walking along the beach was invigorating, but saddening to see as I spotted the carcases of at least 6 seals. Some were of decent size, others looked malnourished or possibly the waves had uprooted them from their resting places under the sand from an earlier burial. I don't ever recall seeing that many from one storm. Overfishing, malnourishment, over population because of all the shark finners killing all our sharks ? Who knows ?

The Rio Del Mar beach homes seem to have generally weathered things fine. There were palm leaves and other detritus all over. The one thing that would be a boon for those homeless that collect cans and plastic bottles, was to come down here and clean up. Good for the beach and ocean and easy pickings for those in that business....
