Sunset State Beach is a handicap-accessible beach located 16 miles south of Santa Cruz passing through Highway One and San Andreas Road. Operated by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, this stunning 1.5 mile long beach is bounded by large rich agricultural areas west part of Watsonville City. The northern part contains the Manresa State Beach, a beach that hosts the junior lifeguards program.
Visitors can access this public beach in two ways. First is at the entrance where a small parking area and less picnic tables are lined along the shade of Monterey cypress. After it was set aside as America’s biggest national haven for marine life, accessibility as a visitor park has finally become a reality for Monterey Bay Sanctuary .
The anticipated visitor center project has undergone a decade of extensive preparation and fundraising headed by the officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with Santa Cruz city chiefs.
The visitor center will have a gift shop, a theater showing films about wildlife and history of Monterey Bay, a classroom and office facilities, as well as a floor with telescopes looking out over the ocean.
