Watsonville homes
Known as California’s strawberry capital, Watsonville is located in the Pajaro Valley of Santa Cruz County and has an ethnically varied population, many of whom work in the town’s agriculture, construction, and manufacturing industries. Watsonville real estate can be a good choice if you are looking for affordable housing.
One benefit of owning Watsonville real estate is the pleasant year-round climate, about 60 to 70 degrees, making Watsonville an attractive coastal environment for the neighboring inland communities which experience very hot summers. People come to Watsonville over the hill from congested San Jose to cool down in the summer. It is the ocean breezes from California's western ocean exposure that provide year-round mild temperatures, and one of the best climates in the world for growing strawberries in the rich soil. Every summer thousands crowd downtown Watsonville for the annual Strawberry Festival.
Adding to the attraction of Watsonville real estate is the fact that most of the coastal land adjacent to Watsonville is part of the beautiful Monterey Bay Sanctuary, which provides opportunities for walkers, joggers, bikers, families, locals and visitors to enjoy and learn about one of the most ecologically unusual bodies of water in the world.
Over the years Watsonville real estate has attracted a growing Hispanic population, and the local school district has about 18,000 students, out of a population of 50,000, showing that Watsonville is a young and vibrant community. With Watsonville real estate you can live in a rural area, but be only minutes from shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Watsonville real estate opportunities consist of many nice neighborhoods with lovely houses surrounded by flower-filled gardens.
If you own a Watsonville home you are close to many of California’s top attractions. Santa Cruz is 15 miles away, San Jose, 27 miles, the city of Monterey is just down the road about a 40 minute drive way and San Francisco is less than 2 hours to the north. There are great beaches in Santa Cruz County, and if you like to surf, bike and hike, Watsonville real estate can be an affordable choice in Santa Cruz County.
Watsonville, founded in 1852, has a rich history that begins in the more modern days with Europeans, mostly Hispanic that descended upon the region in 1769. There were missions, and Mexican-owned ranches. During the 1848 Gold Rush, prospectors flooded the area and those that didn’t strike it rich turned to farming. Among the ethnic groups that came to the region during that time were African Americans, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese, and Northern and Southern Europeans.
Food manufacturing and agriculture of fruit, vegetables, and flowers are still the economic mainstay of the city, as they have been for a century and a half.
